What will happen in STRIDE: National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA)

Dimitris Parsanoglou, Associate Professor of Sociology participates in STRIDE together with other six researchers (Maria Symeonaki, Alexandros Sakellariou, Aggeliki Yfanti, Giorgos Filandrianos, Atzer Ichtiar, and Sofia Skoula).

NKUA participates in all the activities of STRIDE but mainly contributes to the following three tasks.

First, NKUA participates in the policy analysis and meta-analysis in Europe with the goal is to examine major national and regional changes in education over the past 25 years, especially those aimed at reducing inequalities and promoting fair opportunities for all . This includes also the mapping and meta-analysis of longitudinal studies and evaluations following the key educational reforms. Moreover, the task includes content analysis on the policy documents collected and an overview of education reforms and policy initiatives on equity and equality in education. This task will produce an overview of key factors of policies developed and operational in the 29 European countries. NKUA will cover Greece, Cyprus, France, Spain, Croatia, Italy, and Portugal. Once finalised, the overview and glossary will also serve as input for the interactive map developed and the digital toolbox.

Second, NKUA also leads the production of an interactive map of significant factors of inequalities in education. This map will show important factors affecting inequality in education, such as policies and student performance that foster or hamper equity, inclusion and resilience in education, training and educational achievements over time. The main steps include inputs and procedure manual, an initial map structure involving consultation with stakeholders, building the map, and trial and refining the interactive map. This will be achieved through the categorisation of existing data, including definition of categories, indicators and by refining of data in order to render them comparable. By collaborating with other partners, NKAU will build a tool that allows users to compare data and visualise how education systems have evolved over time. The map will be continuously updated to reflect new data.

A dynamic tool that will provide the possibility of comparison and visualisation of data as well as the possibility of potential updates in case of new rounds of data inputs.

Finally, NKUA is contributing to research on successful policies that address educational inequalities. By studying long-term data from five European countries, the aim is to identify what works in reducing gaps in education outcomes that includes collecting insights from policymakers and analysing their perspectives on what makes policies effective.

NKUA will contribute in the methodology procedure and working manual, which will lead to the development of the analytical plan for quantitative longitudinal data analysis and instruments of qualitative data and the collection on policy makers’ perspective. This task will also select policy initiatives and interventions that can link to the existing longitudinal data and registry data in the countries of interest. NKUA will also organise interviews with key policymakers in each country involved in the case studies, using a standardised approach to ensure consistency. This task includes first content analysis on media press messages from the government on the selected policy initiatives and interventions in the country case studies. Secondly, includes the conduct of interviews with policy makers related to these policies. Partners involved in case studies will each interview 2-4 policy makers with a common interview guide. After the collection of data NKUA will contribute to the comparative analysis and the written reports.

NKUA  also host the 1st Consortium meeting in Athens in October 2024 (16-18/10).
