STRIDE at the LINEup Project Opening Event

On 20 September 2024, STRIDE’s Impact Manager, Halla B. Holmarsdottir, participated in the inaugural event of the European project LINEup – Longitudinal Data for Inequalities in Education. The event was held at Karlsruhe University of Education, Germany, and brought together over 60 participants, including prominent researchers and education experts.

This gathering featured representatives from LINEup’s sister projects – LEARN, MapIE, STRIDE, and REVERSE-ED – highlighting the collaborative effort to address educational inequalities through rigorous, data-driven approaches. Among the highlights was a presentation by Panagiotis Kampilis and Maria Fragkiadaki, researchers at the University of Piraeus, who unveiled the first project report titled Tracing Educational Inequalities in Primary and Secondary Schools: Insights from a Systematic Review of Longitudinal and Repeated Cross-Sectional Studies. The report covered research evidence about the persistence and evolution of educational inequalities and available longitudinal data. This review serves as a critical reference point for the ongoing work across the sister projects, including STRIDE.

The event featured two compelling keynote addresses. Francesca Borgonovi, Honorary Professor at University College London (UCL) and Head of Skills Analysis at the OECD Skills Centre, delivered insights on Inequalities in Education and the Value of Longitudinal Data. Cordula Artelt, Director of the Leibniz Institute for Educational Trajectories (LIfBi), followed with a presentation on the application of longitudinal data in Germany’s education system. These talks underscored the transformative potential of longitudinal research in uncovering and addressing disparities in education.

The event also provided ample opportunities for networking and international dialogue, emphasising the shared commitment to leveraging longitudinal data in combating educational inequalities. Participants concluded the day with a renewed focus on evidence-based strategies to inform policy and practice.

Halla B. Holmarsdottir will subsequently share the key insights from the LINEup opening event with the Norwegian National Stakeholder Group during their meeting on 6 November 2024. The presentation aims to strengthen national engagement with the project’s goals and foster alignment with STRIDE’s mission.
