Situated in southwest London, the University of Roehampton is revered for its rich history, tranquil surroundings, and steadfast commitment to the advancement of equality, diversity, and inclusion. Through its committed approaches to mitigating education inequalities, the University promotes access to higher education amongst students from disadvantaged backgrounds who often face intersectional barriers to accessing and gaining a good degree at a university. Roehampton endeavours to facilitate student success through the cultivation of valuable skills pertaining to work, society, politics and citizenship. At Roehampton, students not only learn critical academic skills but also the skills to ensure that their voices are heard and amplified in their communities, countries, and across the globe.
Our interest in the project
Our Roehampton team is led by Professor Bryony Hoskins, renowned scholar and global leader on citizenship education, inequalities, and political socialisation. Our team also includes Khuyen Dinh, postdoctoral research associate, specialising in academic leadership and development, and research assistant, Sofia Ferrer, specialising in global inequalities and digital media. Our interest in the STRIDE project stems from our commitment to rigorous and independent intellectual activism and our goals to increase equity and inclusion in education. This commitment is represented by our leading role in other research projects such as Gender Empowerment through Politics in Classrooms (www.G-EPIC.eu) that tests interventions to support disadvantaged girls in developing their confidence in their political voice and UNICEF Life skills and Citizenship Education project (LSCE) in the Middle East and North Africa that is developing measurement tools that can be used to evaluate the education systems (currently piloting in Egypt, State of Palestine and Tunisia) and thereby support the learning of life skills in the region. To our team, and the university at large, all these projects encompass critical mechanisms for reducing inequalities and creating global change, and we are excited and honoured to be a part of this.
Our role in the project
In the STRIDE project, our team has multiple critical roles. We are currently conducting an in-depth literature review and meta-analysis, which aims to deliver an overview of significant national and regional education reforms that attempt to target and mitigate educational inequalities and learning outcomes across Europe. Simultaneously, we are co-leading the project activities that will consist in an analysis and comparison of the effectiveness of educational reforms using longitudinal datasets. This work is completed through quasi-experimental analyses of existing large scale educational assessment data and supplemented with interviews with policy makers.
