Meet the Partners: TÁRKI Social Research Institute

Founded in 1985, TÁRKI Social Research Institute is one of Hungary’s most respected research organisations, well-known for its work that engages in policy studies in areas such as social inequalities, income distribution, and welfare systems. TÁRKI has more than three decades of experience in empirical social science research in Hungary and in Europe. Its background includes research on a wide range of issues related to social stratification, labour markets, income distribution, consumption and lifestyle patterns and attitudes. TÁRKI has been involved in many international projects, helping to inform better social policies through its evidence-based research.

Our interest in the project

TÁRKI joined the STRIDE project because of its approach to understanding and addressing educational inequalities, particularly in terms of social and economic factors. STRIDE’s goal of reducing inequalities in educational outcomes is in line with TÁRKI’s mission to generate insights into how social policies such as employment, welfare and education reforms affect education systems. By contributing its expertise in re-analysing large-scale data from studies such as the International Civic and Citizenship Education Study (ICCS), the OECD Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS), and the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS), TÁRKI together will the other project research partners will examine how these policies affect educational achievement in different European countries.

STRIDE also offers the opportunity to extend research on how socio-economic background, gender and other factors combine to influence educational outcomes. The project allows TÁRKI to apply its expertise in complex data analysis and generate meaningful insights to help policymakers develop inclusive education reforms.

Our Role in the Project

TÁRKI Social Research Institute is leading the activities aimed at mapping trends in inequalities in educational achievement across Europe. This work, coordinated by TÁRKI and involving the Oslo Metropolitan University, the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and the Jagiellonian University, includes the re-analysis of existing data from major international educational assessment studies following education reforms, such as  ICCS, PISA, TIMSS, PIRLS. In this scope, TÁRKI is responsible for developing an analytical framework of inequality in education using an intersectional approach and building databases to study how different factors intersect and contribute to inequalities among students who have faced multiple disadvantages. This work will provide an overview of key indicators and their impact on inequalities in 29 European countries. The overview will be used to create an interactive map depicting significant factors of trends in policies and inequalities in education and a digital toolbox to help policymakers develop informed strategies to reduce educational inequalities and promote equity and inclusion across European education systems.
