STRIDE related projects: Moving Beyond Good Intentions

Moving Beyond Good Intentions – A Method to Transcend Teachers’ Ethnic-Racialized Understandings of Students

We are excited to introduce a new project related to STRIDE, “Moving Beyond Good Intentions – A Method to Transcend Teachers’ Ethnic-Racialized Understandings of Students.” This PhD project is spearheaded by Ditte Holch Jensen, a young researcher who has recently embarked on this initiative at VIA University College in Denmark. This scholarship is a collaborative effort between VIA University College and Aarhus University, focusing on social inequity based on students’ ethnic backgrounds within Danish schools.

Addressing Educational Inequity

Despite their best intentions, research indicates that teachers often struggle to achieve educational equity for ethnically minoritized students. This project aims to tackle this challenge by providing teachers with methodical reflection strategies to better understand and support ethnic minority students. Using ethnographic action research, Ditte Holch Jensen will work closely with six teachers to develop new methods for reflecting on and transforming implicit biases in their teaching practices. By identifying biased practices in interactions with students and exploring alternative approaches, this project is part of VIA’s strategic effort to promote greater equity within schools.

Project Goals

  • Develop Reflection Strategies: Equip teachers with tools to reflect on their biases and practices.
  • Transform Teaching Practices: Encourage the adoption of more inclusive teaching methods.
  • Promote Educational Equity: Ensure that all students, regardless of their ethnic background, have equal opportunities to succeed.

Stay tuned for updates on this important work and its impact on promoting educational equity.
